EY

John Christian EY was a mariner in the early 1800s. His daughter, Ann, married James SAWYER at St Margaret, Westminster, in 1839. Both parties gave their address at the time as 3 Pool Place, Westminster.

We have made contact with other Ey researchers who have told us that the name may well have come from Germany.

In the course of our researches we came across a book called "History of Mary Prince, a West Indian Slave, Related by Herself" (the story was related in a BBC documentary). In it, Mary mentions having been bought by one Captain I. The book suggests that "I" was the first letter of his name, and that the Captain's identity was being protected, as he is painted as a pretty brutal individual.

Could the original scribe have been mistaken in this - could he really have been Captain EY?  Maybe we will never know.

Unless, that is, someone out there has more information?
